Quickly add or remove decimal places in Excel

Ampler increases or decreases the decimal places of selected numbers with a keyboard shortcut, so you set precision without the Format Cells dialog.

Quick answer: Select the cells and press Ctrl+, (comma) to increase decimals or Ctrl+. (dot) to decrease — or use the Increase/Decrease decimal functions in the Ampler tab’s Number group.

How to use it

Increasing and decreasing decimal places in Excel with Ampler

Add or remove decimal places with a shortcut.

  1. Select the cells with the numbers.
  2. Click Increase decimal or Decrease decimal, or press Ctrl+, (comma) or Ctrl+. (dot).

Keyboard shortcut

Ctrl+, increases and Ctrl+. decreases decimal places; the functions are also in the Ampler tab’s Number group.

Why use it

Adjusting precision cell by cell through the Format Cells dialog is slow. Ampler puts increase- and decrease-decimal on a keyboard shortcut, so you tune the precision of a figure or a range instantly.

How consultants use it

The right precision matters in a model — too many decimals is noise, too few loses information. Three habits apply:

  • Precision to suit the figure: decimals are set to what the number needs
  • Fast on a range: a whole selection is adjusted in a keystroke
  • Consistent within a table: related figures share the same precision

Shortcut decimal control tunes precision without the Format Cells dialog.

Tips & best practices

  • Use Ctrl+, and Ctrl+. to tune precision fast.
  • Keep related figures at the same precision.
  • Avoid excess decimals that add noise.

Availability

Included in Ampler for Excel and the Ampler Suite, on Windows desktop Excel.
