Cycle frequently used number formats in Excel

Ampler cycles the selected cells through your company’s standard number formats in a keystroke, so numbers are formatted consistently across a model.

Quick answer: Select the cells and click Cycle number format on the Ampler ribbon; click again to cycle to the next format.

How to use it

Cycling number formats in Excel with Ampler

Select the cells, then cycle the format.

  1. Select the cells you wish to format.
  2. Click Cycle number format (Ctrl+Shift+1), and click again to cycle to the next format.

The formats it cycles through are the ones defined under Settings → Cycles, so you can set them to your company standards.

Keyboard shortcut

Cycle number format is Ctrl+Shift+1 by default; reassign it in the Ampler Settings → Shortcuts.

Why use it

Numbers need a consistent thousand separator, decimal places, and negative treatment. Cycling through your standard number formats applies the house standard in a keystroke instead of the Format Cells dialog.

How consultants use it

Consistent number formatting is a basic quality signal in a model, and applying a house standard by hand is slow. Three habits apply:

  • Consistent presentation: thousand separators and decimals follow one standard
  • Negatives on standard: negative numbers follow the house treatment, e.g. red
  • On the house standard: the formats come from the defined cycle

Cycling number formats keeps figures presented consistently.

Tips & best practices

  • Select a range and cycle to the standard format.
  • Set the formats to your house standard under Settings → Cycles.
  • Keep formatting consistent across the whole model.

Availability
