Clean a workbook to make it client-ready in Excel

Ampler cleans a workbook of the things you don’t want to send out — metadata, comments, watches, unused named ranges — and can convert formulas to values and tidy the view, all from one dialog.

Quick answer: Click Clean workbook on the Ampler ribbon, tick the areas to clean, and click OK.

How to use it

Keyboard shortcut

Clean workbook has no default shortcut. To assign one, open the Settings dropdown on the Ampler ribbon, choose Shortcuts, click Set shortcut on the function, and press your key combination.

Why use it

A workbook carries far more than its visible numbers — author metadata, comments, watches, unused named ranges, and live formulas that expose the model. Clean removes what you choose in one pass, so the file that leaves is exactly what the client should see.

How consultants use it

A workbook that goes to a client must not leak the model behind it or the firm’s internal notes. Sanitising it is standard practice. Three conventions apply:

  • Strip internal content: metadata, comments, and watches are removed before the file leaves.
  • Values, not formulas: converting to values sends the numbers without the live model.
  • A tidy final view: gridlines, zoom, selection, and print areas are reset for a clean hand-off.

Clean workbook makes a file genuinely client-ready in one pass.

Tips & best practices

  • Work on a copy if you still need the formulas internally.
  • Convert formulas to values when sending numbers without the model.
  • Clean as the final step before an external send.
